This is a tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype; a photograph printed on a thin piece of metal that had been coated with lacquer or enamel. They were most popular during the 1860s and 1870s, but are still made today. From a family collection. I’m unsure of the previous owner, but their relatives included Phil Chase, Everett Shearer, Fred Shearer, Bruce Elrod, Lillie Hollingbaugh, Fred Hollingbaugh, Margaret Sharp, J. Hollingbaugh, Bessie Hollingbaugh, Cliff Hollingbaugh, Nellie Hollingbaugh, Ferd Protzman, Eva (Hollingbaugh) Shearer, and Nill McCort. This is known as a 1/6 plate tintype, since it measures about 2.25 x 3.5 inches. I found a cabinet card of the same men and dogs, standing in the same place. That photo was by J. Moore of Leesville, Ohio. All items are protected in archival sleeves and packaged in rigid cardstock.
