CIRCA 1890s CABINET CARD REVEREND HENRY McPAKE PREIST WHO WAS ROBBED AND KILLED. This is the only known photograph of this man. I have only been able to find an etching of him online that was actually drawn from this photograph. Ordained to the priesthood in the Church of St Charles Borromeo on December 24, 1895. As an infant Henry was baptized at St Patrick’s Church, Philadelphia, his sponsors were a Mr Hailey & Anna McPeak. Over the years the surname took on many different spellings. Father McPake was robbed & murdered at the church of the Annunciation, Tenth & Dickinson St, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As many as 20,000 people viewed the remains before the service. The crowd outside the church was so large the police had to rope off the streets. Rev Fenton J Fitzpatrick was the celebrant of the Mass. Fr McPake is buried in his family lot with his parents, sisters and older brother. Phila Inquirer Nov 11, 1897. FATHER McPAKE LOSES HIS LIFE. Body of the Curate of the Annunciation Church Found in an Areaway. Supposed to be murder. Detectives at work trying to unravel the mystery of the death. The young priest’s life. Ordained but a short time ago, he had by his exemplary conduct made a good name for himself. At the bottom of four steps, leading from an areaway at the rear of St. Paul’s Academy, Christian Street, above Ninth, to the basement of that building, was found early yesterday morning the body of Rev. McPake, second assistant pastor of the Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation, Dickinson and Tenth Streets. Upon the forehead, right temple and nose were marks that looked as though they had been made by a sand bag. Blood was spattered on the steps and on the flagging below. The priest’s pockets had been rifled of a watch, a pair of eye glasses and a wallet. From his shoulders had been stripped a sacred stoll. His disordered clothing indicated that those who searched him were in exceeding haste. Father McPake’s overcoat and hat, the former carelessly rolled up, were found at the head of the stairs. After making an examination of the body yesterday afternnon, Dr. Cattell, the Coroner’s physician, stated that Father McPake died of Uraemia. Father McPake is buried with his parents Henry McPake and Margaret McBride McPake, his sister Margaret McPake, his brother Owen McPake and his maternal grandmother Catharine Cassidy.
