Black and Tan Books offers… George White’s Scandals Photo Collection: 1920’s (Flapper Era) 59 Photos. Notes: Large grouping of primarily early to mid- 1920? S photos of George White? S Scandals Broadway Reviews? Performers, 59 total, most measuring 8? Many inscribed and signed and many annotated on versos with performers? Printed primarily on heavier stock. Broadway Reviews rivaled and sometimes out-performed the Ziegfeld Follies of the same era in popularity and launched the careers of such performers as W. Fields, the Three Stooges, Ray Bolger, Helen Morgan, Ethel Merman, Ann Miller, Eleanor Powell, Bert Lahr and Rudy Vallee. Louise Brooks, Dolores Costello, Barbara Pepper and Alice Faye made their show business debuts as lavishly dressed (or more often underdressed) chorus girls strutting to the Scandal Walk. ? White himself invented both the Charleston and the Black Bottom dances, frequently performed in the Scandals by stars Ann Pennington and Tom Patricola, who subsequently touched off a national dance craze. The keywords here are early, early and early? George Gershwin composing music for White? S reviews early in his career, Erte designing costumes and sets early in his career, Max Weld executing them early in his career? And the historic Apollo Theater, recently built, regularly hosting White? Black Apollo history was to come somewhat later. This collection was assembled by then Scandals? Stars Gene and Madeline Denardo, dancers who performed both by themselves or with others, perhaps most often with the Seven Sheiks, aka the Royal Filipino Sheik Band. The Denardos are understandably featured in a dozen or so of the 59 photos. The Denardos were often mentioned in early newspaper? From (for example) the January 19, 1926 Tennessean:? One of the real stars of the show is Myra Brown, whose songs have been big hits when the show has played. She does her bits in truly big league style with the Denardos, specialty dancers [who] are worth the admission price of the show. The Denardos are dancers one could watch all evening and be content. They are accompanied by the Royal Filipino Sheik Orchestra in their big Arabian scene [which] reaches the heights of terpischorean art. Of special note are two large group photos of Christmas parties, one annotated on the verso thus:? The Christmas party given in the Hotel Annsley, Atlanta, Georgia for the? The historic Annsley was built in 1913 and razed in 1972 and was also the site of Martin Luther? S celebratory banquet upon his receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. This photo includes George White himself with his arm around then romantic interest Ann Pennington. The second Christmas party photo, presumably taken on a different but contemporaneous date, features his? Doubtless research would uncover many of the identities of others in these photos and provide hours of entertainment. M happy to answer any questions and provide one or several additional photos on request. Condition is generally good with occasional minor creasing, chipping to margins, short tears, etc. Given the historical importance of this collection, offers less than full price will likely not be entertained.
