ONCE A SLAVE NOW A FREE WOMAN. A NEGRO WOMAN HOLDS A WHITE BABY. Carte de visite by Heald and Stiff of St. A mulatto woman holds a white child about 10 months or so old. Three cent revenue stamp on verso dates the photo after the emancipation of slaves in January 1863. The woman appears to be about 35 years old thus stayed with the family after freedom. The images came from an Arkansas estate. Card has light tone, minute trim to right border Excellent content. The family may have left Arkansas for a trip to St. Louis and while there took photos.
