Photographer: Professor Karl Blossfeldt (German, 1865 – 1932) – Internationally renown and historically significant photographer, sculptor, teacher and artist who lived and worked in Berlin, Germany. Achieved international fame in the 1920’s for his iconic close up photographs of plant types. Title: “Pirus alnifolia ” Subject: Botanical study – enlarged plant abstract. This print comes from the renown 1942 printing which was one of only three high quality photogravure portfolios ever published of Blossfeldt’s ground breaking photographic work. There were several other releases of his work from the 1930’s to the 1950’s and even present day reprints but, none that have approached the quality of the “trilogy” 1928/29, 1932 and 1942 single sided prints. T his is an original AUTHENTIC (NOT a modern reprint) , vintage 1942 photogravure (héliogravure) print by the renown photographer, teacher and artist Professor Karl Blossfeldt. Catapulted to international fame some 80 years ago by his amazing isolated close up photographs of strange botanical forms, Blossfeldt was an early pioneer in the transformation of photography from a medium of documentation to that of an art form. He devoted his entire 30 year career to the close up photographing of plant sections creating engaging images which crossed into the abstract art world. Blossfeldt designed and made his own camera which allowed him to magnify his plant specimens up to 30 times their actual size. Today he is considered an important and influential figure in photographic history and his work is held in numerous collections and museums throughout the world. IMPORTANT NOTE: These are amongst the most difficult prints we have made scans of – a testament to the quality gravure printing of these images as they possess the best qualities for which gravure is known – subtle shading and a wide range of tone. This subtle shading (particularly the background) in many cases cannot be accurately picked up by the scanner. This photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight “honeycomb” grid, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone – all indicative of a quality sheet fed gravure print. ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine “honeycomb” screen controls the amount of ink to be transfered to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to it’s significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today.
