Fascinating rare lot containing the ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE ROMAN AMPHOTEATER!! Comes from the estate of Prof. Adolph Reifenberg of the Hebrew University, who researched the place in 1945-6. 17 rare large 1944 Aerial photographs 9×9 inch / 23×23 cm. 5 other aerial photos, various sizes. 13 photos of the site and its environments – 18×13 cm / 7×5 inch. 28 smaller photos, various sizes. Several articles / reports on Caesarea history, start of the ruins, the dunes covering the ancient city etc. Several pages with notes, sources, etc, and a few letters to and from British Mandate officials regarding the work Prof. Reifenberg was doing in Caesarea, researching soil and examining the sand dunes. Several maps – printed, blueprinted and hand drawn, including a few of the NEWLY DISCOVERED AMPHITHEATER. Among them – the typewritten copy of the letter sent by Reifenberg to the Director of the Department of Antiquities of British Mandate authorities ANNOUNCING HE DISCOVERED THE REMAINS OF A ROMAN AMPHITHEATER UNKNOWN UP TO THAT POINT!! NOTE: Serious excavations of Caesarea started only in 1956! He was born in Berlin, studied agricultural chemistry and graduated from Giessen University. A Zionist from his youth, he was among the first? Alutzim who arrived in Ere? Israel from Germany after World War I. In 1924 he became a member of the staff of the Institute of Chemistry of the newly founded Hebrew University. In 1947 he was appointed professor at the university. Reifenberg also served as dean of the faculty of agriculture and of the faculty of mathematics and science. Reifenberg built up one of the finest collections of Palestinian and ancient Jewish coins (presented after his death to the State of Israel), and in 1951 became the first president of the Israel Numismatic Society.
