Up for sale is a gorgeous pictorialist landscape photograph by Clara E. (Estelle) Sipprell, titled “The White Birch Vermont”. There is a signature and title both on the outside mat and the backing paper that the photograph was mounted to. I’m not positive on the date or print material, but it seems to be from around 1950 and possibly a platinum print (there is a nice pulpy texture to the paper’s surface). Curiously, there is another photograph on the underside. According to the description of Syracuse University’s special Sipprell collection, it wasn’t uncommon for her to have final prints “mounted to a rejected print back to back”, most likely to prevent warping/wrinkling. It appears as if this “reject” print is “Luigi in the Birch Wood, Manchester, VT 1951″ showing the painter Luigi Lucioni painting “Birch Processional”. The top of this side of the print was attached to the paper backing, so when revealing the image I opened up this seal, leaving some paper residue where it was glued. The adhesive was also applied liberally on the reverse, leaving noticeable strokes, particularly around the edges. It seems as if the adhesive has affected the bottom left corner of the main photograph, showing slightly through (as shown in the 10th image). There is also a blemish about 1 long in the center of the main photograph, as shown in the last image, which looks to be a water mark. The photograph is framed in a thin black-painted wooden frame. There is a crack in the wood where one of the eye screws is attached. The mat is showing signs of discoloration/deterioration. The mat (signed) measures 16 3/16″ by 13 15/16″, while the print measures 9 1/4″ by 7 1/4″ and is mounted on a 10 1/2″ by 7 15/16″ piece of paper (signed), all of which is backed with cardboard. The glazier’s points could be re-inserted, but I would suggest having the print reframed with archival materials separating it from the signed mat and paper.
