VINTAGE LOT OF 3 TWO FEMALE NUDE ORIGINAL STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHS WITH HAND-SIGNED EXHIBITION BOOK BY STEPHEN DEUTCH. The two photographs are RARE female nude studies of a beautiful woman named Louise Le Marr. Both of these photographs appear to be taken during the same sitting. One photograph is a quarter-turn bust shot emphasizing her face and upper-torso (measures 9 3/4″ x 7 1/2″). The other photograph is a three-quarter body length frontal shot with her head in profile as she’s resting on an upholstered chair (measures 9 3/4″ x 7 3/4″). Both of these vintage photographs have excellent chiaroscuro (contrast of light and shadow). The back of the bust shot photograph has a “photograph by STUDIO DEUTCH” stamp along with a handwritten notation stating “Louise Le Marr” (the sitter’s name), 4065 Sheridan Rd. This handwritten notation appears to be created by Stephen Deutch himself (comparing this handwriting style to his signature in the book). The back also has a “10981” pencil handwritten notation. The back of the three-quarter body length photograph only has a “3795” pencil handwritten notation. Stephen Deutch and his wife Helene opened the Studio Deutch photography studio in Chicago in 1937 after moving from Paris. In 1939 he was arrested in Chicago for producing female nude study photographs but no criminal charges were filed with the help of the Art Institute of Chicago (they argued that these were artistic nudes and not pornography). I estimate these two original studio photographs to be from the late 1930’s-1940’s. Stephen Deutch was known for his art photographs published in the Popular Photography and Coronet magazines during the time period. These are both ORIGINAL STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHS and not gravure prints. It measures 9″ x 9″ and has 143 pages packed full of information and photograph images. These two original photographs are in good condition for being about 70-80 years old. They both have a little edge wear and edge scratches probably from the old frames. The upper-right side has a lite scratch which appears to be touched up in the photograph studio. The lower-left corner edge has an old tape repair on the back not affecting the images. The backs have some old dried adhesive residue. The back of the bust shot photograph has a little clear tape on the upper and lower edges. The imperfections don’t detract and these two vintage photographs will mat/frame nicely!
