MILLER Marshall Milton, also known as Marshall M. Miller and Milton M. A rare albumen photograph attributed to American photographer Marshall Milton Miller of a monument to the Portuguese poet Luís de Camões in Macao, c1863. Original b/w albumen photograph. Extracted from 19th century album, and remains mounted on thick album card. Taken circa 1863, and probably printed in the late 1860s-1870s. Captioned in pencil beneath the image’The tomb of Camoens [sic], the Portuguese poet, at Macou [sic]. A further sepia albumen photograph, circa 1870s, on the reverse (of a shrine gate in Nikko, Japan, probably Yomeimon at Tosho-gu, but captioned indistinctly). This rare albumen photograph, attributed to 19th century American photographer Marshall Milton Miller, shows the exterior of the monument to Portuguese poet Luís de Camões in Macao. This image appears (firmly attributed) as photo no. 11 in the e-book’Chinese history of photography: the mysterious M. Milton Miller’, Serge Plantureux, N°25-2018, published on-line on Thursday 28 June 2018, as well as in the on-line Luminous-Lint gallery of M. Milton Miller’s work. The 19th century album that this photograph was extracted from appears to have been an amalgam of images of the Far East dating from the 1860s-80s by different photographers [the Japanese shrine on the reverse of the card is by an unknown photographer and appears to be of a slightly later date (c1875-85)]. The Miller photograph is taken from the original negative, but possibly at a slightly later date i. Born in Portugal, Luís Vaz de Camões had his Portuguese name being transliterated into Ka Mo Ying, Mo Mei and Ka Mo Ian by the Chinese. He had been to Goa of India and Malacca. He died in Lisbon of Portugal on 10 June, 1580. In 1849, a wealthy Portuguese merchant in Macao, Lourenço Marques, financed the construction of the Camões Grotto at the Camões Garden. A bronze bust of the poet sculpted by M. Bordalo Pinheiro was added in 1866. Marshall Milton Miller was born on 5 April 1830 in Dummerston, Vermont, USA. An American professional photographer, he worked in Hong Kong and Canton (Guangzhou) for about three years from July 1860, before returning to America. Whilst in China he demonstrated an exceptional skill in studio portraiture. This item is in the category “Collectables\Photographic Images\Photographs”.
