Ari Marcopoulos Silver Gelatin Print David Hammons. The photograph was taken in the early 1990’s. It was subsequently printed ca. 2008 in a small limited edition of 15 w/ 1 artist’s proof. The photographer, Ari Marcopoulos, is quite famous today but back in the 80’s he started out as Assistant to Pop Art painter Andy Warhol. Perhaps Marcopoulos felt compelled to photograph Hammons because he felt a kinship to a fellow artist who’s no stranger to “the streets”. Or, perhaps the photographer saw something of Warhol in Hammons, who’s been described as’Warholian’ (a master of putting his own public persona at issue). Hammons is a conceptual artist associated with the Art Povera movement. As he’s known to work with’found objects’, I find this photograph’s backdrop to be compelling. Overall with frame : approx. 20 5/8 x 16 5/8 inches. Features : From the net: Ari Marcopoulos (1957): Ari Marcopoulos arrived in New York from the Netherlands in 1979, and started taking pictures. He documented the relationship between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, making some of the last images seen of both. He recorded the legendary downtown skateboarding scene in’90s New York from the street, making some of the first images ever seen of, among others, the teenaged Harold Hunter and Justin Pierce. Through the past decade he has proven to be one of America’s only firmly established artists playing by no established rulesdespite, for example, his two appearances in the Whitney Biennial, the survey exhibition considered the most important bellwether of contemporary American art. Marcopoulos takes very little interest in today’s gallery system and its business of wealth, canonization and the market. Marcopoulos’ practice these days is very much about what he sees on a daily basis. Composing and distributing work in the form of publications is a constant part of his public output, so the most recent work is always what is focused on.
