Rudy Burckhardt: Six O’ Clock, 1947. Signed, Black & White Photograph. Black and white photograph. 11 3/4 x 8 in. You couldn’t build a city like New York in good taste,’ Rudy Burckhardt- photographer, filmmaker, painter – observed in 1994 of the hometown he’d adopted some six decades earlier. That was, in large measure, what he liked about it. Of the countless bohemians who’ve fallen in love with New York, Burckhardt’s feeling for the metropolis that inspired his greatest work is marked by lightness – passion masquerading as a passing fancy. Burkhardt is known for his photographs of hand-painted billboards which began to dominate the American landscape in the nineteen-forties and fifties. He immigrated to New York City. Between 1934 and 1939, he traveled to Paris, New York, and Haiti making photographs mostly of city streets and experimenting with short 16mm films. Burckhardt married painter Yvonne Jacquette whom he collaborated with throughout their 40 year marriage. We warrantee and represent that the goods are as described in the above listing.
