He would then contact print the negative onto larger photographic paper so that a naturally formed black color field surrounded the image. Sudek felt this treatment gave the picture “proper balance” and was particularly taken with the way the image contrasted against the dark background. From that point forward he began to print most of his work with a surrounding black field regardless of negative size. For display you have the option of matting this piece right up to the actual image or to display the full photographic sheet 8 x 11.5 in. We have included two scans to show both “looks” but, the image was designed by Sudek to be displayed with a surrounding black border.
