FINE PHOTO GALLERIES is pleased to offer this original vintage silver gelatin photograph by the important german photographer of the human form Gerhard Riebicke. He was primarily known for sports, dance and most famously… In 1909 he began his photographic career as a press photographer in Berlin eventually concentrating on sports, dance and naturism. By the early 1920’s he was primarily focused on nude studies and naturism with his finest work being done from the 1920’s – 1940. He received critical acclaim and was regularly published in many magazines, periodicals and books of the day. In World War II his studio was largely destroyed during a 1944 air raid over Berlin with most of his archives perishing in the attack. After the war he received little in the way of photographic work or assignments and lived off of the occasional publication of his pictures from the 1920’s & 1930’s. He resided in Berlin in relative obscurity until his death in 1957. In recent years Riebicke’s work has received the attention of the art world including solo exhibitions in Russia (2002) and Germany (2004) followed by many group exhibitions throughout the world since the early 2000’s. The remains of Riebicke’s destroyed archives were later acquired by Galerie Bodo Niemann, a Berlin art gallery specializing in photography who subsequently published a monograph book of the artist’s work. As a result of the 1944 bombing and the destruction of his archives, Gerhard Riebicke photographs have become rare and sought after with many prints being the only examples in existence and unique in all the world.
