For more of the highly collectible original work of this prolific photographer of the female form. Internationally renowned jazz age glamour and art photographer who was a friend and contemporary of east coast photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston who originally inspired Hesser to pursue art photography. Hesser had studios in New York and California but, operated primarily out of his west coast studio and photographed many Hollywood starlets and movie stars during the 1920’s – 1940’s, many without clothing in his artistic nude studies. Taking advantage of the favorable west coast weather he focused heavily on artistic outdoor nude studies shooting in local parks and secluded southern California beaches. One of his favorite outdoor locations was Griffith Park were he shot many of his widely published nude studies including his famous nude photographs of rising film star Jean Harlow. Hesser published his nude studies under the guise of “art magazines” during the 1920’s and 1930’s which were touted as posing guides for painters and artists (to avoid prosecution under obscenity laws at the time). The publications were successful for over a decade and in addition to Hesser’s photographs published the work of Alfred Cheney. Johnston, Carlo Leonetti, John DeMirjian, Debarron Studios and other significant figures in the photographic world. Hesser himself shot with a Graflex camera that allowed contact prints large enough (3 x 4.5 inch range) to be used as master prints for these publications and many of his surviving prints are in that size range. Today Hesser’s original prints have become highly collectible with his nude studies being particularly scarce. We list beautiful original vintage photographs and photogravures everyday!
