HUGE VINTAGE “HAPPY FAMILIES”. PHOTO ALBUM # TWO. This is the SECOND of two extremely interesting vintage photograph albums showing the same extended family and friends. I’ve used the title “Happy Families” for this and the related item because the people in the photographs are probably the most relaxed and pleasant-looking I’ve come across in family albums. With few exceptions, they all look as if they’re having a grand time in a grand world. Even the obviously ill Ruth, the young woman whose photographs definitively tie the albums together, appears good-humored. Both albums are highly atmospheric, redolent of their era, with many photographs being labeled. The photographs show the stylishly dressed family whose album this is living in big comfortable houses with nice automobiles in the driveway, vacationing, taking part in various leisure activities, etc. From internal clues, it’s possible at least some of the family lived in Jacksonville, IL. The description that follows relates to this SECOND album. NUMBER OF PHOTOGRAPHS: There are over 350 photographs in the album. PARTICULARLY INTERESTING PHOTOGRAPHS: Particularly interesting in many of the photographs are the clothes – this was a dressy crowd for the time. There are many photographs featuring automobiles of the era. There are charming children professionally photographed in costume, as well as a Theta Delta Chi photograph of 1923 from Hanover, NH (the fraternity was founded at Dartmouth in 1869), and a stylish 1925 wedding. DATE OF ASSEMBLY: Judging by the organization and order of the photographs, it would appear that the album was begun around 1910 and continues through the 1920s. ALBUM: Album is horizontal format with dark-brown fabric-covered soft covers bound with cord. Album was made by Ideal Specialty Co. SIZE: The album measures 15-1/2″ wide by 9-1/4″ high by 1-2/8 thick. It has 96 pages, 35 of which are blank. CONDITION: There are several loose pages, some with a tear. One third is broken off one page, but both parts are present. Most of the pages show wear at edges from being repeatedly turned. Some of the photographs look as if they were processed yesterday, many are faded to one degree or another. A few photographs have been torn from pages, but most appear to be present, if loose, in the book. Most of the photographs are of acceptable quality for album collecting. A few of the photographs have bent corners or minor tears. RELATED ITEM: This is one of two related photograph albums featuring members of the same extended family. What makes the albums definitely related is that the same girl and young woman – “Ruth” – appears in both albums. Ruth is easy to spot because, from a young and pampered girl in ALBUM ONE she is shown as clearly ill and bedridden in both albums and then disappears from both albums at roughly the same date in the 1920s. This album will make a good addition to any collection of antique and vintage photographic albums. It would be particularly useful for the reference library of a costume designer or collector of vintage clothing.
