RUDOLPH VALENTINO / THE EAGLE (1925). Vintage original 10 ¾ x 14 ¾ 27 x 37 cm. Black-and-white double weight semi-glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. Rudolph Valentino, Vilma Banky, Louise Dresser, dir: Clarence Brown; United Artists. Though the story is set during the 1790s reign of Catherine the Great, the costuming, such as that which Rudolph Valentino models here, was seemingly early-19th century. Valentino and wife Natasha Rambova, as producers, chose Gilbert Adrian to design the extravagant costumes for this epic, and it would be one of his first film efforts. In the story, which gave Valentino an array of costume changes, a wanted Russian lieutenant becomes a masked vigilante seeking vengeance upon the man who stole his family’s land, only to fall for his charming daughter. The edges of the still appear to have been creased and at one time it was attached to a backing as there are adhesive remnants along the back of the edges. There is a round ink stamp at the top right corner, which appears to be foreign and Rudolph Valentino’s name has been written at the bottom right edge, both of which are nearly un-noticeable.
