In the photo, the two are attending a personal costume party and this is a Candid Pose that was taken of them together. Photo was taken sometime between 1930 to 1933. They were married from 1931 to 1933. In 1926, CAROLE LOMBARD, suffered from a serious car accident. The accident caused some permanent scarring on the left side of her face, particularly around her left eye. It was known that she had to use make-up to hide the scarring. Until, I saw this photo, I did not believe there were any photos in existence that showed the scarring, due to her make-up use for photos. However, this photo shows the scarring around her left eye. Evidently, because it is a personal candid photo and taken during a party, the make-up had diminished around her eye, therefore, showing the scarring from the car accident. I have seen many hundreds of photos, and have never seen the scarring around the left eye, other than this one photo. Also, CAROLE LOMBARD, is wearing a rather large ring on her left hand, which I believe is the large sapphire ring William Powell was known to have given her. Also, the very last known photos taken of CAROLE LOMBARD in 1942 in Ft Wayne, Indiana, show her wearing a mink coat that looks exactly like this one. This would lead me to believe it is the same mink coat she had with her on the plane that crashed, causing her untimely early death. I believe this photo, was taken after WILLIAM POWELL and CAROLE LOMBARD were married, which would date the photo between 1931 to 1933. I have never seen this photo in existence, other than this one photo. VERY RARE Photo, indeed. Handwritten lightly in pencil on back of photo is William Powell & Carole Lombard (Attending a costume party- note Powells hand drawn monocle). Photo is in VERY GOOD condition. There looks like glue or other residue on the back of the photo, as may have been placed in a scrapbook long ago. Edgewear is mildly present, as well as minor light surface creases in background that one would expect from a photo of this age, however, only noticeable under bright light. The luster to the photo is very good, unlike the scan, that shows here. Superb resolution and focus. This is a Vintage Original photograph and NOT a REPRODUCTION restrike.
