This 8-by-10-inch male nude beefcake photograph by photographer Milo of Los Angeles (real name, Pat Milo) dates originally from the 1950s and features tattooed sailor Mike Wilette in a dramatically lit studio pose. In 1996, working with the publisher Jansenn, the Milo Estate agreed to print from Milos original negatives a tiny limited-edition series of only three photographs of certain Milo images. Since only three of these 1996 limited edition photographs of Mike Wilette exist, the estate-stamped limited editions are extremely rare and collectible. Fewer 1996 photographs of this Mike Wilette pose likely exist than do the originals printed in the 1950s. For sale here is one of those extremely rare 1996 estate photos, expertly and beautifully printed on glossy coated stock, and in very good condition. This original 8×10 photograph is stamped en verso by the estate Milo of Los Angeles, Edition of 3, 1996. The model’s name is also hand-inscribed on the reverse, along with the series number 1413. This framed and matted photograph was included in a 2005 Toronto art gallery exhibit. Golden Boys The Beefcake Era at the renown OConnor Gallery. MILO OF LOS ANGELES. Pat Milos work is often compared to that of Bruce Of Los Angeles because of the lighting, quality and often the models these photographers shared. Not at all surprising considering the series of events that led to him becoming Milo of Los Angeles. James Patrick Milos interest in boys led to an interest in photography, as it was a safe way for him to approach guys. When his father discovered some of his semi-nude photos, he was thrown out of the family home with nothing but the clothes on his back. He became Pat Milo. Pat drifted along the east coast working as a fry cook. He met Lyle Frisby and together they opened a street front photography studio in New York, which quickly failed. After contacting Bruce Bellas (aka Bruce of Los Angeles) Lyle decided to move to Los Angeles where he opened another studio, featuring nude male photos. Pat followed a year later. He continued working as a short order cook, while learning the physique photography business, greatly aided by Bruce. When Lyle died of leukemia Pat fell heir to not only his negatives but to his extensive customer list as well. Milo of Los Angeles was born. Soon after, the response to photo set sales through Tomorrows Man and a series of. Other similar digest-size physique magazines, along with Lyles customer list, allowed Pat to retire as a short-order cook to concentrate exclusively on photography. Successful a physique photographer, renowned for capturing the edgy quality of rugged young street trade. Around the time of the Stonewall Riots, Pat noted the rise of harder-core pornographic images would no doubt lead to demise of physique photography. Pat died quietly in his sleep in September 1969. Soon after, the era of physique studios was over. In June 2005, I curated the gallery exhibit Golden Boys The Beefcake Era featuring more than 50 original vintage physique photographs by world-renown physique studios and photographers, at the equally world-renown gay gallery, OConnor Gallery in Toronto, Canada. Running June 16 to July 16, 2005, Golden Boys The Beefcake Era was the first curated show devoted exclusively to vintage original beefcake photography at OConnor Gallery. The exhbit featured more than 50 photographs by various renown physique photographers, including Bruce of LA, Les Demi Deux, Kris Studios (Chicago), Bob Mizner (Athletic Model Guild), Don Whitman (Western Photography Guild), Troy Saxon (American Photography Guild), John Barrington, and, among others, Pat Milo, aka Milo of Los Angeles. It was the first of two Toronto exhibits on vintage beefcake that I curated. In 2009, I curated the gallerys second show, Beefcake Champions & Rogues. Founded in 1995 in the heart of Torontos gay village, the now defunct Toronto gallery operated by Dennis OConnor prided itself on being the first full-time commercial art gallery in Canada (and, at the time, one of only three or four in the world) to represent exclusively gay and lesbian artists; an international selection of upcoming and established artists’ works in painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery and photography. The gallery attracted visitors and gay artists from around the world. Photographers that exhibited at OConnor Gallery included Tom Bianchi, Michael Alago, Edward Lucie Smith, Michael Chambers, Carlos Quiroz, Gilberto Prioste, Norman Hatton, and dozens more. That this photograph didnt sell during the show was my great fortune; it was a favorite of mine.
