BACKGROUND ABOUT THE PHOTO & EXHIBITION. In 2009, I curated the gallery exhibit Beefcake Champions & Rogues featuring 68 original vintage physique photographs by world-renown physique studios and photographers, at the equally world-renown gay gallery, OConnor Gallery. Founded in 1995 in the heart of Torontos gay village, the now defunct Toronto gallery operated by Dennis OConnor prided itself on being the first full-time commercial art gallery in Canada (and, at the time, one of only three or four in the world) to represent exclusively gay and lesbian artists; an international selection of upcoming and established artists’ works in painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery and photography. The gallery attracted visitors and gay artists from around the world. Photographers that exhibited at OConnor Gallery included Tom Bianchi, Michael Alago, Edward Lucie Smith, Michael Chambers, Carlos Quiroz, Gilberto Prioste, Norman Hatton, and dozens more. Running June 12 to July 12, 2009, Champions & Rogues was only the second curated show of vintage original beefcake photography at the gallery. The first I had curated in June 2005, called Golden Boys The Beefcake Era. Champions & Rogues featured 68 vintage, original photographs by Milo, Bruce of LA, Les Demi Deux, Kris Studios (Chicago), Plato Studios (New York), Walter Kundzicz (Champion Studios), Bob Mizner (Athletic Model Guild), Denny of San Francisco, Don Whitman (Western Photography Guild), Troy Saxon (American Photography Guild), and John Barrington, among others. There were also six or seven fantastic photographs, where little was known; exceptional photographs where perhaps only one of. The trinity of pertinent details. The Studio, The Model, The Photographer. Was known, but still the images worthy of inclusion in a gallery show. Dubbed One Handed Reading this exquisite classic pose of a nude sailor reading a risqué novel is known to be by Plato Studio in New York City, however the photographer and model are unknown. That this photograph didnt sell during the show was my great fortune; it was a favorite of mine. Rather than leave it at the gallery on sale, I promptly took it home, where its hung for the past decade. It’s ready for a new collector and new home.
