Born in Vancouver, Canada in 1955, gay photographer Mark Brickell began his photography career in 1976. However, it was only in 1984, a decade before his death, that Brickell began to develop a body of work focused on male nudes. His work shares many characteristics with other male nude studio work of the 80s, and while many of Brickells work reflects Mapplethorpes influence, in a considerable number Brickell goes back to the same high style of the 1930s from which Mapplethorpe drew, and establishes his own vision.
