Vintage 1930s MULGA COAL MINE DISASTER Photograph Film Negative Lot Alabama
Phenomenally rare original ASSOCIATED PRESS “Wirephoto” newspaper negatives from the MULGA coal mine disaster in 1937. Lot contains a total of 7 different images. The Mulga mine, located in Birmingham Alabama, was a comparatively new mine with few working rooms, numerous headings, a high velocity in the air. A fall in a pillar section forced gas out on the naked lights. The explosion was propagated by dust. The mine foreman who was outside the mine was the only man on the mine crew who escaped alive. It was reported that 40 miners lost their lives. Miners stand in groups at the mine, some in hats and others in hardhats with lanterns. One stands with his back to the camera, MULGA can be read across the back of his uniform. Edging has no description or numbering. I believe this is the first of the series. BM2 – Relatives and friends of the trapped miners stand at the entrance of the shaft. At this time, they are likely unaware that there are no survivors. BM3 – Wrapped in blankets, members of the recovery team leave the entrance of the shaft. BM4 – Stretcher is prepared to carry the body of a miner recovered from the blast. BM5 – Bodies of the victims are laid in rows atop coffins. BM6 – A recovered body is lifted from a stretcher at the temporary morgue. BM7 – Burned bodies recovered from the explosion lay in the makeshift morgue. Negatives are large and measure approximately 11 1/2″ x 8″. They have been stored improperly and are dirty.
