T his is an AUTHENTIC (NOT a modern reprint) , vintage 1929 photogravure by the renown photographer, teacher and artist Professor Karl Blossfeldt. Catapulted to international fame some 80 years ago by his amazing isolated close up photographs of strange botanical forms, Blossfeldt was an early pioneer in the transformation of photography from a medium of documentation to that of an art form. He devoted his entire 30 year career to the close up photographing of plant sections creating engaging images which crossed into the abstract art world. Blossfeldt designed and made his own camera which allowed him to magnify his plant specimens up to 30 times their actual size. Today he is considered an important and influential figure in photographic history and his work is held in numerous collections and museums throughout the world. IMPORTANT NOTE: These may be the most difficult prints we have ever tried to make scans of – a testament to the fine gravure printing of these images as they possess the best qualities for which gravure is known – subtle shading and a wide range of delicate tone. This delicate and subtle toning/shading (particularly the background) in many cases cannot be accurately picked up by the scanner. This photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight “honeycomb” grid, excellent pressing of ink and a wide range of tone – all indicative of a high quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word “Finephoto” does not appear on the actual print. Karl Blossfeldt’s photographic work was first shown to the world at large with the publishing in 1928 of “Urformen Der Kunst”, a high quality hardbound photogravure compilation of his amazing plant abstracts. The volume was again printed in 1929 with what many consider to be highest quality gravure prints ever made of his work – exceeding even those of the 1928 printing. The 1929 plates were printed on what may have been the finest sheet fed gravure press (Ganymed) in Germany at the time. The paper is of high quality and the prints themselves are simply beautiful. There were several later publishings of this work from the 1930’s to the 1950’s, but none that approached the quality of the 1929 single sided prints. We list beautiful original vintage photographs, photogravures and antique prints everyday! READY FOR FRAMING & DISPLAY! – The expensive engraved copper plate photogravure process and the resulting fine prints make vintage photogravures highly collectible and excellent vintage prints for framing. ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine “honeycomb” screen controls the amount of ink to be transfered to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to it’s significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world’s most renown photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process.
